Liza Dalby
Liza Crihfield Dalby first went to Japan as a teenager and became fluent in the language.
She received her doctorate in anthropology specializing in Japanese culuture

from Stanford University in 1978.
As the only Westerner to have become a geisha, which she did as research for her Ph.D.
and her books Geisha and Kimono, she is an consultant for the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha".
Her new novel "East Wind Melts the Ice" will be published from University of California Press in Spring 2007.
